As a part of Tharwa Foundation's mission, we seek to enable citizens to become activists and journalists. We pursue this goal through our Citizen Journalism Initiative and Tharwa Insitiute for Democratic Leadership. At Tharwa, we believe that those most able to make an impact are often everyday citizens who build on their unique perspective and passions. From the early success of our Citizen Journalism Initiative, we have learned firsthand that passionate citizens often serve as the best and most compelling experts on the issues unfolding where they live.
Even in the age of mass information, there is still a great need for on-the-ground research, especially research that has an activist slant. The research of our citizen journalists has been used to expose corruption in the latest presidential referendum in Syria and raise awareness of human rights abuses such as child labor in Morocco. These citizen journalists are making a far-reaching impact by enabling Tharwa to advocate and lobby for change by supplying us with critical eye-witness coverage of events. It is our hope to see the concept of citizen journalism expand so that every person, old or young, female or male, will know the value of their own unique perspective and experience and have the tools to make their voices heard. Our Institute for Democratic Leadership training programs provide intensive training to those who want to become effective activists and journalists, but there are also links to many resources online for those who are unable to participate in the Institute. On this page you will find links to a number of helpful resources.
