Private Prisons in Yemen: An in-depth study

Tharwa is proud to present our second Tharwa Short Study.  This is a compelling investigation of the history of the power of tribal leaders in Yemen and the private prisons controlled by some of those tribal leaders.  It examines not only the legal circumstances surrounding these prisons, it also interviews citizens formerly incarcerated in those prisons.  Don't miss this examination of a serious issue all too often ignored by human rights activists locally and globally.

Economy and Human Rights Series Issue no. 2: Poverty and Child Labor: Stories from Morocco

In this second issue of our Economy and Human Rights Series, Tharwa is proud to present the work of our citizen journalist Sanae Boutahar.  Sanae, accompanied by a group of volunteers that she gathered together, embarked on an ambitious project to document and investigate the problem of child labor in Morocco.  She interviewed children living on the streets of Rabat and Casablanca.  She tried repeatedly to get interviews with governmental ministries, and succeeded in getting interviews with a number of NGOs working to address the problem of child labor and child homelessness in Morocco.  In this issue, Sanae's research and her compelling interviews with actual children on the street have been translated into English.

Economy and Human Rights Series Issue no. 1: Poverty and Child Labor: Stories from Damascus and Northern Syria 2007-2008

Tharwa is pleased to bring you our first Tharwa Briefing, in our Economy and Human Rights Series.  This briefing is made primarily of reports composed by our citizen journalists in Syria. These citizen journalists risk government repression and surveillance to bring the issue of child labor in Syria to global attention.  They interviewed children working on the streets as well as specialists, and took cameras onto the streets to visually document the faces of these children.
